The presentation features two interactive works by Indian multimedia artist Shafiq: the game installation ‘That Which I Do Not Know’ and the single-player game ‘The Bride Who Could Not Stop Crying’.
Her multidisciplinary projects often combine code, animation, text, sound and manual labor, bringing tactile and poetic dimensions to her technological digital objects and installations.
Shafiq has studied Soviet publishing in languages of the Indian subcontinent, including the translated illustrated fairy tales and popular-science books on which generations of readers grew up during the 1960s through the 1980s.
The visual archive she assembled from this varied historical material became the basis for a narrative quest.
Her artistic research treats the process as an experimental environment in which dismantling familiar narratives releases the emancipatory potential of play and artistic fiction.
