Museum JAN in Amstelveen will present 'Lita Cabellut x Goya – De dwaasheden' from 23 September 2026 to 14 March 2027. The exhibition is described by the museum as the first in the Netherlands to bring together the large-scale contemporary work of Lita Cabellut and the enigmatic etching series 'Los Disparates' by Francisco de Goya, in a visual and conceptual dialogue across two centuries.
The show centers on 22 monumental, multidisciplinary works by Cabellut responding to Goya’s series of 22 prints. According to Museum JAN, Goya’s images depict a dark, absurd dream world without morality, a psychological vision of a world in which reason has disappeared. Cabellut’s works answer with paintings and spatial objects that engage with identity, power, fear, ethics and the vulnerability of the individual.
The museum says the exhibition is being organized in anticipation of the 200th anniversary of Goya’s death. The presentation takes place at Museum JAN itself, located at Dorpsstraat 50 in Amstelveen, with opening hours listed as Tuesday to Sunday from 11:00 to 17:00. Cabellut’s response to Goya is framed by the museum as confrontational and contemporary. The institution says her paintings, sculptures and installations address existential uncertainty and social upheaval, while making clear how relevant Goya’s imagery of madness, political chaos and moral decay remains. In the museum’s account, both artists refuse to spare the viewer and instead force sustained looking.
Museum JAN also outlines Cabellut’s background in broad terms. The museum notes that she grew up on the streets of Barcelona, was adopted at age 12, and later studied at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam. It says she has lived and worked in the Netherlands ever since. The exhibition page adds that her work is included in international museum collections and has been shown from Mumbai to Shanghai, Seoul and Madrid.
Cabellut’s artistic method is described as physical and intuitive, beginning with close study before expanding into large works that combine traditional and contemporary techniques. The museum says her figures are used to portray human fragility and to offer a critical view of society. It also notes that she exhibited at Museum JAN in 2018, was named Artist of the Year in the Netherlands in 2021, and received an honorary doctorate from the University of Barcelona in 2024.
A catalogue titled 'Lita Cabellut x Goya – Los Disparates' will be published by Waanders Uitgevers, with a contribution by Ralph Keuning. Museum JAN’s website and newsletter both identify the exhibition as a major autumn presentation for 2026, positioned around the encounter between Cabellut’s contemporary paintings and Goya’s historic print cycle.
