The vernissage takes place on Saturday 26 September from noon to 4pm, with the inauguration scheduled for 1pm.
He deliberately distances himself from the self-consciousness and professionalism that characterize much of today’s art. Instead, his work favors a deliberately dysfunctional language influenced by doodling, vandalism and graffiti.
A dark, dry humor runs through Shrigley’s work, bringing the absurdity of everyday fears and ambitions to the foreground. He comments on the world through nihilistic humor, wordplay and questions that require viewers to examine both themselves and their surroundings. The resulting questions are directed not only toward the individual but also toward the environment in which that individual lives.
Shrigley is particularly known for drawings made in a deliberately simple, childlike style. That style makes the drawings immediately recognizable as his own.
Born in England in 1968, Shrigley studied at Glasgow School of Art. He has held solo exhibitions around the world, including at Copenhagen Contemporary, the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne, YBCA in San Francisco, Museum Ludwig in Cologne and Dundee Contemporary Arts. His work is represented in collections including Tate in London, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Art Institute of Chicago and TBA21 in Madrid.
