Cathy Daley was a Canadian artist who lived from 1955 to 2022. She was especially known for black pastel drawings on parchment depicting female upper bodies and legs, usually draped in flowing dresses or tutus.
Daley’s work emphasizes the abstract nature of the representation of movement and is characterized by theatricality and female self-determination. Inspired by ballerina tutus, fairy-princess clothing and Barbie couture, it examines childhood memories of what it means to be female in Western culture and explores the cultural representation of the feminine and the body.
The drawings draw on contemporary visual languages of glamour, fashion, pop culture and mythology to examine the iconography of femininity as it exists in the cultural imagination, personal memory and fantasy.
