Brandenburg is a Berlin-based artist known for highly detailed pencil drawings that document everyday urban life while subtly alluding to the crises of our time. His drawings address everyday urban life through a detailed pencil practice, while their subject matter alludes to contemporary crises.
His creative process always begins with photographs, which he takes himself during nocturnal city walks or sources from magazines and other media. The photographs may thus come from Brandenburg’s own nighttime movement through the city or from images encountered in print and other media. The inversion of light and dark, a signature technique Brandenburg introduced in the 1990s, continues to characterise his work today.
The silvery, reflective quality of the graphite lends an otherworldly quality to these everyday motifs, making them resemble negatives of snapshots from a strange parallel world. An accompanying announcement identifies Marc Brandenburg’s ‘Untitled’ (2024) as a graphite-on-paper work.
