Kluge-Ruhe is presenting ‘Woven Together: International First Nations Weaving Forum’ in partnership with Siera Hyte. The public program takes place Saturday, October 3, from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Meeting Barn at UVA’s Morven Sustainability Lab near Charlottesville. Internationally renowned First Nations artists and weavers will give talks, presentations, and demonstrations.
The forum aims to provide a platform for cross-cultural engagement among First Nations artists and an opportunity for University and Charlottesville communities to engage with participating artists through the public program. It is held in conjunction with Sonja Carmichael’s artist residency at Kluge-Ruhe.
Carmichael is a senior Quandamooka weaver and a leader in the regeneration of Quandamooka weaving, passing on cultural knowledge and skills through workshops, exhibitions, and field research. Her practice draws on stories connected to traditional Quandamooka weaving while exploring contemporary materials and techniques, including discarded ghost nets and fishing lines, in response to concerns about preserving the natural environment.
Hyte is the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts’ Schiller Family Curator of Indigenous American Art and the institution’s first full-time curator dedicated to Indigenous American art.
