After a full closure for renovation work from January through April, Ichihara Lakeside Museum is partially open through September with a theatrical serial exhibition by two artist groups with entirely different styles. The second installment, following Kota Takeuchi’s exhibition, features Sasaoka Yuriko, an artist who creates distinctive narrative spaces centered on characters and song.
Visitors pass through a secret entrance behind the museum shop and proceed through complete darkness into a world different from everyday life. Rather than simply recreating the lost community, the work reconstructs another version of local history through bodily performance and installation, using fragmentary traces preserved in photographs.
Combining playfulness and mourning, the space proposes a new relationship between the site’s history and contemporary art while leading visitors into an imagined alternative lakeside place.
Sasaoka was born in Osaka in 1988 and is currently based in Shiga.
