The September online exhibition ‘New and Creative: 20th Century prints by Shin Hanga and Sosaku Hanga Masters,’ listed under Asia Week NY September 2026, features woodblock prints by shin-hanga artists Kawase Hasui and Ohara Koson alongside works from the sosaku-hanga movement.
The presentation includes a number of Hasui’s pre-1923 earthquake designs, including the blazing orange version of ‘Kamino Bridge, Fukagawa’ from 1920. The work is dated summer 1920 and belongs to Hasui’s ‘Twelve Scenes of Tokyo’ series.
Nine sosaku-hanga designs are drawn from ‘100 Views of New Japan,’ a series published between 1938 and 1941. According to the Art Gallery of New South Wales website, Japanese authorities stopped publication of the series during the Second World War because they feared that the interior of Japan would become known to its enemies.
