Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo in Turin is presenting 'EXHAUST', the first solo exhibition in Italy by Xin Liu, from 15 April to 11 October 2026. The exhibition brings together film, installations and new works to examine the consequences of technological and scientific aspiration, with a particular focus on what remains when promises of progress fail. The foundation’s current-programme listing says the project reflects on residual traces such as space debris, degraded materials, codes and altered organisms, turning obsolescence and waste into a generative field for artistic inquiry.
The exhibition is presented at the foundation’s Turin venue and is listed as remaining on view until 11 October. According to the institution, the work has been developed with curatorial consultancy by Hans Ulrich Obrist and in collaboration with K11 Art Foundation Hong Kong. Xin Liu’s show arrives alongside other major spring and autumn exhibitions on the foundation’s calendar, including June Crespo’s 'Danzante' and Lenz Geerk’s 'Theatre of the mind', both also shown until 11 October, as well as Diego Marcon’s 'Krapfen' and Paola Pivi’s 'Art of universe', which are listed as closing on 26 July. The institution’s programme also includes 'Before it happens' at Palazzo Re Rebaudengo in Guarene, underscoring the foundation’s multi-site activity in the region.
The framing provided by the foundation positions 'EXHAUST' as a meditation on failed futurity rather than a celebration of innovation. By linking film and installation to material remnants and altered forms of life, the exhibition points to the afterlife of technological ambition: not only its systems and codes, but also the residues left behind when those systems break down. The project description emphasizes that these remnants are not treated as dead ends, but as materials that can open up new possibilities.
The artist’s first solo presentation in Italy is being held in the context of a wider institutional season that also includes public programmes and educational activities. The foundation notes that its Turin venue is open on Thursdays from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. with free admission, and from Friday to Sunday from noon to 7 p.m. It also states that the foundation will be closed from 3 August to 2 September, with activities resuming on 3 September.
A related public event, 'Let’s Read', is scheduled for 17 September from 8.30 p.m. to 10.30 p.m. and is described as taking place in the context of 'EXHAUST' and 'Danzante'. The programme joins literature and contemporary art through Hao Jinfang’s 'Pechino pieghevole', and is led by the foundation’s cultural mediators, but the main exhibition remains Xin Liu’s 'EXHAUST' at Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo through 11 October 2026.
