The chairs are cast as the subjects of an immersive performance. Inspired by the performing arts, Wilson used light, sound and scenography to create four thematic worlds. One takes its cue from Jackson Pollock, with organic, colourful forms and unusual materials. Another is described through clean lines and soft tones that evoke modernist architecture, calm and order.
The project turns on the objects’ presence rather than their utility. Kunsthal describes the installation as emphasising the chairs’ meaningful, almost theatrical power, allowing them to speak without words.
Kunsthal is realising ‘A Chair and You’ in close collaboration with Fondation Musée Barbier-Mueller and mudac, the Museum of Contemporary Design and Applied Arts in Lausanne.
