The Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum at Florida International University in Miami will present ‘Our Tres Grandes: Fidelio Ponce, Carlos Enríquez, and Amelia Peláez’ on Thursday, September 10, 2026, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Dr. Alejandro Anreus, whom the museum describes as a leading scholar of Latin American, Caribbean and Latinx art, will lead the lecture.
The programme takes its title from the museum’s comparison with Mexican muralism’s ‘Tres Grandes’: Diego Rivera, José Clemente Orozco and David Alfaro Siqueiros. The museum states that the Cuban vanguardia had its own ‘Tres Grandes’ in Fidelio Ponce, Carlos Enríquez and Amelia Peláez.
Anreus’s lecture will explore the three artists’ lives, work and historical context. It asks what made them “distinctly original, profoundly Cuban, and yet universal,” and gives particular attention to the 1940s, described by the museum as Cuban art’s “golden decade,” when it took its place on the world stage.
The event page’s image caption identifies Amelia Peláez’s ‘Marpacífico’ (detail), a 1936 oil painting on canvas.
