Serpentine will present Ebun Sodipo and Rosa-Johan Uddoh’s ‘Atlantic Cruises: The Sex Tour’ at the Serpentine Pavilion in London on 25 September 2026 at 8pm. The Park Nights 2026 event is a new iteration of ‘Atlantic Cruises’, the artists’ collaborative performance, which began in 2018 and remains ongoing.
Rooted in Black feminist study, the work uses live sound, image and conversation to explore gender, race and the body. Serpentine describes the performance as a journey through histories of gender, sexual dimorphism, fetish and the libidinal economy of race.
The conversation maps new languages and tools for speaking about the body and the past for Black people of the future. The presentation also continues ideas explored in Sodipo’s essay ‘I Guess I Gotta Help Myself’, published in the Serpentine Reader.
Sodipo is a London-based artist and writer whose work is guided by Black feminist study and spans sound, performance, text, installation, video and sculpture. Using collage and fabulation, she explores real and imagined narratives of Black trans women’s presence, embodiment and interiority across past, present and future. Her work also addresses historical gaps in order to create moments of archival pleasure for Black trans people.
Uddoh works across performance, film, installation, writing and print. Drawing on Black feminist practice, archival research, nostalgia and humour, her work examines popular culture’s role in shaping Black identities. She considers the forms of Black performance encouraged at different moments, the limits and consequences of representation, and the possibilities that alternative scripts might offer for freedom.
The event belongs to Park Nights, the Serpentine’s programme of interdisciplinary artistic interventions in the annual Pavilion. Since 2002, Park Nights has brought together artists from different disciplines to respond to the Pavilion commission. ‘Atlantic Cruises: The Sex Tour’ is curated by Claude Adjil, Curator at Large, with Hanna Girma, Senior Editor and Curator of Editorial Projects, and Liz Stumpf, Assistant Exhibitions Curator.
