Yuko Mohri will present ‘In Concert’, a new site-responsive commission for the Barbican’s Curve, from 1 October 2026 to 24 January 2027. Free to visit, the installation will employ light, sound and kinetic sculpture, featuring Barbican objects, to explore states of flux and acts of repair.
The Japanese artist’s installation is designed to change continuously in response to atmospheric conditions in the gallery. Entropy, transience and renewal are among the ideas it will explore, resonating with the Barbican’s current period of renovation. The commission gives those concerns a temporal dimension: its constituent elements will not remain fixed over the course of the presentation.
Mohri’s work is grounded in DIY aesthetics, surrealist assemblage and experimental music, alongside an enduring fascination with the flow of energy. Her sculptures often bring familiar things—umbrellas, feather dusters, apples and xylophones—into works involving what she calls “unstable elements”, including magnetism, humidity, air, water and gravity.
An earlier work, ‘Decomposition’ (2022), is made from fruits, a wooden bowl, speakers, an amplifier, a computer, electrodes and cables. ‘In Concert’ will run in The Curve through 24 January 2027.
