Sheldon Museum of Art in Lincoln, Nebraska, is presenting ‘Gender, Genre, Generation: Women Painting Abstraction’ from August 14, 2026, through January 3, 2027. The exhibition examines “the lasting potency of abstraction” through recent work by Candida Alvarez, Rochelle Feinstein, Carrie Moyer and Amy Sillman.
The exhibition describes the four artists as “four painters offering the most consequential proposition for abstract painting today.” Magdalena Moskalewicz, Sheldon’s chief curator and associate director for curatorial affairs, organized the presentation. She is scheduled to lead a curator tour of ‘Gender, Genre, Generation’ on October 24 at 2 p.m.
Three further exhibitions at Sheldon share the August 14, 2026–January 3, 2027 run. ‘Grace Hartigan: The Gift of Attention’ explores the creative exchange between painter Grace Hartigan and the New York poets who inspired her. ‘New Horizons’ presents photographs of the Great Plains that explore the horizon as a point of connection. ‘Remembering Modern Art: The Collection of the Museum of American Art, Berlin’ is presenting the Museum of American Art, Berlin collection in the United States for the first time. Its exhibition description addresses the institutions and people that constructed the canon of American modern art at mid-century.
Museum of American Art assistant-led tours of ‘Remembering Modern Art’ are scheduled on September 5, 11, 12, 18, 19, 25 and 26. The tours offer insights into the collection and Sheldon's place within the history of modern art.
The September calendar also includes an artist talk by Elizabeth Burden on September 10, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Burden is the Great Plains Art Museum’s 2026 Elizabeth Rubendall Artist in Residence. Her practice engages artistic archive and blends multidisciplinary studio work with social practice to reflect on the past, present and future. The talk is presented in partnership with the Great Plains Art Museum and Center for Great Plains Studies.
Zanna Gilbert’s lecture is scheduled for September 17, from 5:30 to 7 p.m.
Kurt Andersen’s reading is scheduled for September 24, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. In the spring 2026 issue of Prairie Schooner, Andersen wrote about Edward Hopper’s ‘Room in New York’, a painting in Sheldon’s permanent collection. He will discuss the essay and introduce his latest novel, ‘The Breakup’.
Sheldon’s ‘Precarious’, on view from June 22 through December 13, 2026, is an installation in the Great Hall highlighting works that challenge sculpture’s inherent qualities as a stable and static art form. Admission to the museum, at 451 North 12th Street in Lincoln, is free.
