‘Remedios Varo – Magiens Maler’ opens to the public on Friday 18 September 2026 and runs until 10 January 2027. Louisiana presents it as the first major museum exhibition in Europe of the Spanish-Mexican Surrealist painter Remedios Varo (1908–1963), arranged in collaboration with Moderna Museet in Stockholm and the Mexican art historian and Surrealism specialist Tere Arcq.
Dreams, science and magic converge in Varo’s Surrealist imagery. Her paintings combine varied techniques, fantasies and ideas, with hybrid creatures often appearing in compositions described as enigmatic and cinematic.
Louisiana Club members will be able to attend a preview on 17 September, from 4 to 7 pm, in the South Wing and Concert Hall. Tere Arcq, a Mexican art historian and specialist in Surrealism, will introduce the exhibition in English at 5 pm in the Concert Hall. Arcq has specialised in women Surrealists in Mexico and helped plan the exhibition with Louisiana curator Kirsten Degel.
A Members Morning event follows on 20 September at 10 am in the South Wing and Concert Hall. Club members can see ‘Remedios Varo – Magiens Maler’ in the South Wing and register for an 11 am exhibition introduction by art educator Stephanie Strøyer in the Concert Hall.
On 20 October, ‘Remedios Varo i teori og praksis’ will take place from 5:30 to 7 pm, with participants meeting in the foyer. The event is for Louisiana Club members.
On 30 October, a members’ evening will run from 5 to 9 pm in the South Wing and Bådehuset. The programme includes a guided visit to ‘Remedios Varo – Magiens Maler’, a lecture by art educator Hanne Flarup, and dinner in Bådehuset. It will also cover other women Surrealist artists and the movement’s origins in Paris during the 1920s and 1930s.
