Giuseppe Viner’s painting ‘La Mina’ is on view at the Galleria d’Arte Moderna at Palazzo Pitti. Dated 1900–10, the work depicts an explosion in a quarry in the Apuan Alps as a dramatic image.
In ‘La Mina’, the mountain is presented as wounded by the “zanne del fuoco” (“fangs of fire”), becoming a symbol of quarry workers’ labour and of the risks involved in marble extraction.
