Tacita Dean’s 2011 installation ‘FILM’ will be presented at the Marciano Art Foundation in Los Angeles from September 18, 2026, through February 27, 2027. Organized by MAF Director Hanneke Skerath and independent curator Mark Toscano, the exhibition marks the work’s first presentation in the United States.
First produced for Tate Modern’s Turbine Hall in 2011, ‘FILM’ is an 11-minute silent 35mm installation. It uses film as both material and subject, projecting onto a vertical screen. Its imagery includes a waterfall, street clock, pine tree, smokestack, flickering bulb, mountain and ostrich egg, as well as color-filtered views of the industrial architecture of Tate Modern’s Turbine Hall. Sprocket holes frame the image on both sides.
Dean employed glass matte painting, gate masking and in-camera superimposition of multiple images. The work’s vertical format was achieved with an anamorphic lens turned 90 degrees.
On September 18, the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures’ Ted Mann Theater will present Dean’s 2004 documentary ‘The Uncles’ in 16mm. Toscano will introduce the screening, followed by a conversation between Dean and historian and curator Laurence Kardish.
