The Institut Giacometti in Paris is presenting ‘Surrealist Giacometti: Objects like Sculptures’ through 1 November 2026. Curated by Laura Braverman, the exhibition considers Alberto Giacometti’s Surrealist period from 1929 to 1935 at the intersection of sculpture and the decorative arts.
The presentation places Giacometti’s Surrealist works alongside his decorative-art objects, including lighting fixtures, andirons and vases made for the Paris decorator Jean-Michel Frank. The exhibition brings the two practices into dialogue, focusing on their forms, themes and principles of conception.
Alberto Giacometti’s ‘Table’ (1933) is a key work in the exhibition. The work, and its bronze version, are held in the collection of the Musée national d’art moderne–Centre Pompidou.
Marie Sarré, curator in the Modern Collection Department at Centre Pompidou–MNAM, will give a French-language talk, ‘A Surrealist Table’, at the Institut Giacometti on 23 September at 4 p.m. The talk considers ‘Table’ in relation to transformations of Surrealism in the early 1930s and Giacometti’s relationship with the movement.
