Francesco Clemente’s exhibition ‘In Between’ will close at Triennale Milano in Milan on Sunday, 6 September 2026. The presentation, described by the institution as a major retrospective, brings together approximately 70 works spanning the artist’s painting practice from the late 1970s to the present, including rarely exhibited works, previously unseen productions and new paintings.
The exhibition is installed on the ground floor of Triennale Milano’s Galleria. It takes its title from the idea of being “in between” worlds and dimensions, a condition presented by the institution as a recurring subject across Clemente’s work. The exhibition follows the artist’s imagery through a sense of metamorphosis and an ongoing exchange between interiority and exteriority.
Clemente’s practice is presented as cosmopolitan and experimental, moving between Western and Eastern cultures and traditions. His paintings address questions of identity and human experience through subjects including the self, the body, sexuality, spirituality, myth and dreamlike landscapes. Rather than developing along a single linear path, the work is described as unfolding through multiple directions and visual languages.
The exhibition’s selection therefore places works from different periods in relation to one another rather than restricting the presentation to a single phase of the artist’s career. Its chronological span—from the end of the 1970s to today—also brings together works with different exhibition histories, from pieces rarely shown publicly to recent and newly produced paintings.
‘In Between’ is curated by Francesca Pietropaolo with Robert Storr. The exhibition is presented in partnership with Vito Schnabel Gallery in New York and St. Moritz. The project forms part of a programme at Triennale Milano focused on promoting and developing the Italian art scene, curated by Damiano Gullì, the institution’s curator for contemporary art and public programming. According to Triennale, that programme has involved artists from different generations whose practices move across disciplines, media and techniques.
Admission to the exhibition is €14, while entry is included with Triennale Milano membership. ‘In Between’ remains open through 6 September 2026 in the Galleria on Piano 0 at Triennale Milano.
