Artist Lizza May David will discuss a new work made in dialogue with Ernst Ludwig Kirchner’s ‘Violette Bäume’ at the Brücke-Museum in Berlin on 26 September 2026. The English-language artist talk, scheduled from 4 to 5:30 p.m., will address the painting’s development alongside questions of memory, visibility and colonial traces in museum collections.
The event forms part of the programme accompanying the Brücke-Museum’s current exhibitions ‘Draußen… Im Museum’ and ‘Draußen… Unter Kiefern’. The first exhibition, presented in English as ‘Nature… In the Museum’, examines the motif of nature in the art of the Brücke group and is scheduled to run from 5 July through 25 October 2026. The related programme extends from the museum’s galleries to its wooded grounds and includes tours, workshops, readings and discussions.
David’s contribution is positioned as a contemporary response to Kirchner’s depiction of trees. According to the museum’s announcement, she developed the new work specifically for the exhibition and in dialogue with ‘Violette Bäume’. During the talk, she will discuss the process behind the work while considering how images carry stories and how questions of remembrance and visibility shape their reception.
The discussion will also consider colonial traces in collections. Yvette Mutumba, an art historian, will moderate the conversation. Founded in 1967, the Brücke-Museum describes itself as the world’s only specialist museum devoted to the artists’ group Brücke, founded in Dresden in 1905. Its collection includes paintings, drawings, watercolours and prints by group members including Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Fritz Bleyl, Karl Schmidt-Rottluff and Erich Heckel. The museum presents changing exhibitions that examine the members’ lives and work from different perspectives, alongside exhibitions addressing the wider artistic and historical context of early 20th-century Expressionism.
The September programme also includes thematic tours of the exhibitions, a reading by Lea Maria Spahn and a public meeting of the ‘Betriebsrat der Lebewesen’ developed by the interdisciplinary artists’ group Club Real.
