Fuglsang Art Museum in Toreby L., Denmark, will open ‘John Kørner – Laguna Lolland’ on 2 October 2026, presenting a solo exhibition of new paintings by the Danish artist. The exhibition will remain on view through 28 February 2027 and focuses on water as both a force of nature and an artistic subject.
Born in 1967, Kørner is described by the museum as one of Denmark’s most prominent contemporary artists. The exhibition draws on his upbringing on Lolland-Falster, the island region where issues including climate change and rising water levels have become particularly relevant. The museum’s announcement says the works combine memories of Kørner’s childhood landscape with present-day reality.
The new paintings take inspiration from the area’s flat terrain and cultural history. According to Fuglsang, Kørner’s brightly coloured landscapes offer an image of Lolland that is at once recognisable and transformed, allowing remembered places and changing environmental conditions to overlap. The museum also describes the works as an unusually light aspect of an artistic practice that has often addressed problems.
Several of the works were made specifically for Fuglsang Art Museum. Images accompanying the exhibition announcement identify, among others, ‘A Prospect Which Both Excites and Terrifies Me’ and ‘I Was Fortunate to Discover This’, both dated 2026. The exhibition page does not provide dimensions or a complete checklist, but the museum’s season announcement characterises the new works as monumental.
The exhibition also connects Kørner’s treatment of water and landscape with his earlier public work ‘Bølgen’ (2016) in Nakskov. Fuglsang says the presentation will invite consideration of the relationship between landscape, climate and art, as well as water’s capacity to shape and alter its surroundings.
The museum has scheduled related programming during the exhibition. On 4 October, it will offer two public tours of the new presentation, and family workshops on 11, 12 and 13 October will begin with a child-friendly tour of Kørner’s paintings before moving to a studio session in which participants create their own landscapes. The museum’s description lists flat landscapes, coasts, fields, skies, water and supernatural light phenomena among the subjects explored in the exhibition.
‘John Kørner – Laguna Lolland’ will be presented at Fuglsang Art Museum, Nystedvej 71, 4891 Toreby L., from 2 October 2026 until 28 February 2027.
