The Museum August Macke Haus in Bonn will open ‘Chunqing Huang: Reflections’ on September 9, presenting around 70 works by the Frankfurt-based artist, including paintings and photographs. The exhibition begins at 7 p.m. and will examine August Macke and Expressionism through Huang’s contemporary artistic approach.
Huang, born in 1974 in Heze, China, is described by the museum as an artist whose expressive, individual gesture provides a contemporary perspective on Macke and the Expressionist tradition. The exhibition brings together selected series made over the past decade, creating a broad view of her engagement with painting, photography and the visual language of urban and mediated experience.
Among the featured bodies of work are ‘Painter’s Portrait’ (2016–2023), ‘City Life’ (2016) and ‘Rideau Avignon’ (2023). The presentation will also include works from ‘En Vogue’, an ongoing series begun in 2024. New works were created specifically for the exhibition, according to the museum.
The museum’s announcement illustrates the range of Huang’s practice through several individual works. These include ‘What’s going on? (City Life)’ from 2016, a C-print measuring 108 by 81 centimetres, and ‘Rideau Avignon no 1 (Rideau Avignon)’ from 2023, a pigment ink print measuring 84 by 64 centimetres. A 2024 oil-on-canvas work titled ‘D3 (En Vogue)’ is also identified in the exhibition announcement; it measures 200 by 100 centimetres.
‘Reflections’ will be shown at the Museum August Macke Haus, the former home and studio of August Macke, which remains open with its collection alongside its programme of special exhibitions. The museum presented the exhibition as the next temporary show following ‘Visionen der Moderne – August Macke & Max Ernst’, which had recently concluded when the September programme was announced.
The opening on September 9 is free of charge. The museum’s September programme also includes a members’ tour of ‘Reflections’ on September 11, while a children’s and family workshop and a tour for parents with babies are scheduled later in the month. The exhibition announcement does not give a closing date for Huang’s presentation.
