Sarasota Art Museum will present ‘Chie Fueki: Painting the Floating World’ from October 18, 2026, through April 4, 2027, bringing together works spanning 25 years of the Japanese artist’s career. The exhibition will examine Fueki’s combination of Japanese ukiyo-e atmospheric techniques and Western abstraction, alongside her use of painting, drawing and constructed mulberry-paper compositions.
Organized by Sarasota Art Museum of Ringling College of Art and Design, the exhibition is curated by Lacie Barbour, the museum’s curator of Modern and Contemporary Art, with Rangsook Yoon, former senior curator. It will be shown at the Sarasota Art Museum, located on the Ringling College Museum Campus at 1001 South Tamiami Trail in Sarasota, Florida.
Fueki’s practice draws from her Japanese and Brazilian heritage. According to the museum, her works bring together figuration and abstraction through perspectival space, overlay and juxtaposition. The resulting compositions depict familiar scenes while layering them with shifting visual elements, creating what the museum describes as an intricate “floating world.”
The exhibition will include ‘Lunar Cycle’ (2023), an acrylic work on mulberry paper mounted on wood, measuring 12 by 22 inches. Other featured works listed by the museum include ‘Painting’ (2023), made with acrylic, enamel, graphite and colored pencil on mulberry paper on wood; ‘Where’ (2017), made with acrylic, ink and colored pencil on mulberry paper on wood; and ‘Aiko and John’ (2010), which combines acrylic, pencil, colored pencil and collage on a wood panel.
Fueki’s densely layered works are described as both intimate and expansive, with painting and drawing integrated into constructed paper surfaces. The museum characterizes the exhibition as a presentation of everyday life transformed through vibrant compositions that remain in motion between ordinary and extraordinary experience.
Fueki, identified by the museum as Japanese and born in 1973, is a Ringling College of Art and Design alum. ‘Chie Fueki: Painting the Floating World’ will remain on view at Sarasota Art Museum from October 18, 2026, to April 4, 2027.
