DC Moore Gallery will present ‘On, In, Off the Grid’, a group exhibition examining the grid as a foundation for abstract practice and artistic experimentation. The exhibition brings together paintings, mixed-media works and works on paper by Joell Baxter, Lisa Corinne Davis, Valerie Jaudon, Alfred Jensen, Richard Kalina, Holly Miller, Stephen Mueller, Leslie Roberts, James Siena, Stanley Whitney and George Woodman.
The exhibition will be on view at DC Moore Gallery in New York from September 3 through October 3, 2026. An opening reception is scheduled for September 10 from 6 to 8pm. The gallery is located at 535 West 22nd Street in Manhattan and is open Tuesday through Saturday, from 10am to 6pm.
According to the gallery’s exhibition description, the participating artists organize their work around constructed systems and methodologies. Across the selection, grids and patterns may shift, twist or morph as artists investigate spatial, optical and conceptual possibilities. Repetition, interval, motif and color can reinforce an underlying matrix, while departures from an established rule create variation and alternative pathways through the work.
The exhibition’s premise positions the grid not simply as a visual format but as a working structure for sustained inquiry. Its regular divisions can stabilize a composition, establish sequences and generate relationships among color and form. At the same time, the artists included in the show use distortion and interruption to test the limits of that order, allowing the grid to become flexible rather than fixed.
The selection spans artists associated with different approaches to abstraction and pattern. The gallery’s announcement identifies Richard Kalina’s ‘A Cartesian Diver’ (2009) as one work in the exhibition; the piece combines collage, acrylic and Flashe on linen and measures 48 by 60 inches. The broader group also includes artists whose practices engage color, geometry, repetition and constructed visual systems through varied materials and formats.
‘On, In, Off the Grid’ will be presented alongside ‘And Yet Again’, a solo exhibition of new paintings and works on paper by Katia Santibañez. That exhibition also addresses the grid, but through the artist’s repeated spiral or pinwheel motifs, painted within geometric matrices. The two exhibitions are listed separately by the gallery and share the September 10 opening reception.
