The Institute of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles will present ‘Amia Yokoyama: Our Strange Hollows’ in its Project Room from September 26, 2026, through February 28, 2027. The exhibition, Yokoyama’s first institutional solo presentation, will bring together new sculptures, holograms, experimental animations, paintings and installations examining metamorphosis, hybridity and the unstable boundaries between the body, the earth and time.
Yokoyama is a multimedia artist who lives and works in Los Angeles. Her practice moves between ceramic sculpture, holography, painting, animation and installation, using changes in material and form to question how bodies and objects become, break down and are remade. ICA LA describes the work as simultaneously fantastical, monstrous and grounded in the everyday, with an interest in creating and challenging the mythologies through which the world is understood.
The exhibition’s focus on transformation extends across both physical and immaterial materials. Yokoyama has described her ceramic process as a dialogue with earth, fire, water and air, while also connecting clay and minerals to political histories, cultural rituals, bodily relations, poetry and geological processes. Her work, according to the museum, considers what is gained or lost when something exists across multiple dimensions and passes through successive states of change.
At ICA LA, the new works will move between the visible and invisible. The institution’s description refers to forms concealed behind glass, emerging from bronze structures and drawing on cultural mythologies of the underworld. Holography becomes a recurring point of reference: each fragment of a hologram contains the whole, a structure that the exhibition uses to suggest connections between earthly and spiritual realms.
‘Our Strange Hollows’ is curated by Amanda Sroka, ICA LA’s senior curator, with research support from Nina Fandino Schmidt, a Getty Marrow undergraduate intern. The presentation forms part of the museum’s fall 2026 season, which will open to the public on September 26 with exhibitions and projects by Los Angeles-based artists, including Carl Cheng and Zoe Walsh.
The season’s broader programme places Yokoyama’s investigation of material transformation alongside Carl Cheng’s survey ‘Nature Never Loses’ and Zoe Walsh’s commissioned mural ‘Gathering’. Those projects are separate presentations: Cheng’s exhibition will occupy ICA LA’s main galleries, while Walsh’s mural will appear on the institution’s 7th Street façade. Yokoyama’s exhibition will remain in the Project Room through February 28, 2027.
