Jackson Fine Art has announced the arrival of ‘The Arrow’ (2026), a new work by Tabitha Soren from her latest photographic series, ‘Lightness of Being’. The work is available through the Atlanta gallery, which is inviting prospective viewers to inquire for details or arrange an in-person appointment.
Soren’s process begins with an 8-by-10 camera and available light, according to the gallery. After making the initial photograph in the field, she applies layers of acrylic, varnish or oil to the print, then rephotographs the altered image using extended exposures and handmade lighting. The resulting work treats light not only as a condition of photographic visibility but also as a material element in the image’s construction.
‘The Arrow’ is offered as a signed archival pigment print in three formats. The 32-by-40-inch and 48-by-60-inch versions are each editions of five, while the 64-by-80-inch version is an edition of three. The work is signed on the reverse artist’s label, and further information is available directly from Jackson Fine Art.
The new series extends Soren’s sustained examination of the photograph as an unstable, mediated object. In a statement included with the announcement, the artist writes that images are shaped by “vision, a view, a lens, a crop, a screen, then printing, reviewing, marking, reprinting, and framing.” She describes ‘Lightness of Being’ as a response to the continuous circulation of images and to the distance between an image and the experience that precedes it.
Soren’s practice developed alongside an earlier career in journalism, and the gallery describes her approach to new series as grounded in books, research studies and statistics before those materials are translated into visual form. Her previous bodies of work include ‘Running’, ‘Surface Tension’ and ‘Relief’. The latter was presented in a solo exhibition at Jackson Fine Art from September 16 through December 23, 2022.
Born in San Antonio, Texas, in 1967, Soren received a degree from New York University in 1989 and a Stanford University fellowship in 1997. Her work has been shown at institutions including the Mills College Art Museum, Transformer Station, the Davis Museum, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Indianapolis and the Oakland Museum of California. Her photographs are held in collections including those of the J. Paul Getty Museum, Harvard Art Museums, the Cleveland Museum of Art, the George Eastman Museum and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
Jackson Fine Art is based at 3122 East Shadowlawn Avenue NE in Atlanta and specializes in 20th-century and contemporary photography. The gallery is open Tuesday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; viewings of ‘The Arrow’ can be scheduled in person.
