The Hiroshima City Museum of Contemporary Art has issued a tribute to Yayoi Kusama following news of the artist’s death, recalling the museum’s longstanding connection with her work. In a statement dated August 27, 2026, the museum expressed its condolences and highlighted both a major Kusama exhibition it presented in 2005 and a work currently included in its collection display.
The museum lists that 2005 exhibition in English simply as ‘Yayoi Kusama’ (草間彌生展 魂を燃やる8つの空間), a special exhibition that ran from 22 February to 17 April 2005. The Hiroshima presentation brought together approximately 80 works spanning the artist’s early practice through her most recent work at the time, arranged across eight rooms; the museum notes that the touring exhibition varied its checklist and content at each venue.
Kusama’s work is also represented in the museum’s current collection display, ‘Collection Exhibition 2026-ⅰ’, subtitled ‘The Time of the Museum_Chapter 1: Time Machines’, which runs from 27 June to 23 September 2026 in Gallery A. It includes ‘Revived Soul’ (よみがえる魂), 1995, acrylic on canvas — a work the museum commissioned from Kusama on the theme of Hiroshima.
The notice places the Hiroshima-themed work alongside the museum’s earlier Kusama exhibition rather than announcing a new retrospective or dedicated programme. It gives no information about the circumstances of the artist’s death, and it carries no dates; the run of the collection exhibition is published separately on the museum’s own exhibition page.
The tribute records two points of contact between Kusama and the Hiroshima City Museum of Contemporary Art: the eight-room 2005 exhibition, which included roughly 80 works, and the continuing display of ‘Revived Soul’ in the 2026-ⅰ collection exhibition, which closes on 23 September 2026.
