Mark Moore Fine Art is offering Allison Schulnik’s 'Blue Zombie (with Flowers)' (2007) on the resale market for $25,000. The oil-on-canvas painting measures 30 by 24 inches, and the asking price has been authorized by its current owner, according to material circulated by the Los Angeles gallery.
The work is presented as a transitional painting in Schulnik’s early practice. Mark Moore Fine Art describes it as linking her still-life paintings of the early 2000s with the 'HOBO CLOWN' and 'MISFITS' series that emerged later in 2007. The gallery characterizes the combination of these elements within a single canvas as uncommon among her works.
Schulnik, born in 1978, earned a BFA in Experimental Animation from the California Institute of the Arts in Valencia, California. Her paintings are described in the gallery’s material as densely impastoed and connected to her background in animation, with figurative subjects that include strange creatures and other forms built on a human frame. The gallery also identifies her as an artist who lives and works in Los Angeles.
The painting’s stated connection to Schulnik’s still-life and figurative work can be read alongside an artist statement for the exhibition 'Fools, Rejects, and Sanctuaries,' where she describes casting “the pitiful” from her imagination to inhabit her canvases. She writes that painted bouquets are sometimes dedicated to these figures, while her handling of paint involves old brushes, thick plates of scraped pigment and broad, erratically applied strokes. Her statement identifies the gaze of her characters as a recurring focal point and links their unsettling appearance with ideas of compassion and hope.
Schulnik has exhibited at institutions and galleries including the Oklahoma City Museum of Art, Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art, Rokeby Gallery in London, Unosunove Arte Contemporanea in Rome, Division Gallery in Montreal and ZieherSmith Gallery in New York. Her work has also been shown at the Garage Center for Contemporary Culture in Moscow, the Hammer Museum, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Santa Barbara Museum of Art and the Contemporary Arts Museum in Los Angeles, among other venues. Public collections listed by the gallery include the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego, the Santa Barbara Museum of Art and the Laguna Art Museum.
'Blue Zombie (with Flowers)' is available subject to prior sale. The gallery states that taxes, tariffs, shipping and any viewing expenses would be additional to the asking price.
