Neues Museum Nürnberg Reframes Gerhard Richter Collection Through ‘Atlas’

The Neues Museum Nürnberg has unveiled a new presentation of Gerhard Richter’s works from the Böckmann Collection, examining them through the artist’s extensive image archive, ‘Atlas’. The exhibition, titled ‘Neupräsentation’, occupies three rooms at the Nuremberg museum and has been on view since 22 May 2026, with no closing date listed by the institution.

The reconfigured presentation focuses for the first time on the visual source material connected to works in the collection that also appears in Richter’s ‘Atlas’. Media stations allow visitors to trace how the artist translated collected images into paintings, positioning the archive as a key point of access to his working process rather than simply as background material.

Richter began assembling ‘Atlas’ in 1962, in parallel with his artistic practice. The collection brings together images and ideas that he gathered for use in his work. According to the museum, the Böckmann Collection’s approximately 30 long-term loans constitute one of the largest museum holdings of Richter’s work. They reflect major strands of his practice, including blurred photo paintings, historical subjects, city views, colour fields and the extensive group of ‘Abstract Paintings’.

The presentation includes Richter’s ‘Stillleben (Kerzen)’ from 1983, identified by the museum as ‘Atlas’ sheet 397. The inclusion of the work alongside its related source material underscores the exhibition’s emphasis on the movement between found or collected images and finished paintings. The museum describes Richter as one of the most important artists of the present day, while the display concentrates on the specific relationship between his images, archive and collection.

A multimedia guide accompanies the presentation with information, background and connections relating to the works. The museum has also scheduled public tours of ‘Gerhard Richter: Neupräsentation’ at 3 p.m. on 22 and 29 August and 5, 12, 19 and 26 September 2026; each tour is listed as lasting 60 minutes and costing €3 in addition to admission.

The programme also includes a workshop for young people on 5 September, devoted to collecting and telling stories by recording everyday objects in an album. A second workshop, ‘Self-Made’, scheduled for 16 September, addresses collage and photography. Both events are tied to the Richter presentation, with the first aimed at participants aged 16 and above and the second listed at €15 in addition to admission.

The Neues Museum Nürnberg, dedicated to art and design, is located at Klarissenplatz, 90402 Nuremberg, directly beside the city’s main railway station. Its listed opening hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. from Tuesday to Sunday, with extended hours until 8 p.m. on Thursdays; the museum is closed on Mondays.
