The Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art of Trento and Rovereto, known as Mart, has announced a new exhibition at the Galleria Civica di Trento titled 'Pietre di pane. Memorie di geografie fragili'. Opening tomorrow, the exhibition focuses on vulnerable and depopulated places and presents them as cultural geographies shaped by questions of care, responsibility and engagement.
According to the museum’s announcement, the project takes its point of departure from the thought of anthropologist Vito Teti. Rather than treating fragile territories only as sites of loss, the exhibition frames them as places where new forms of relation can be tested. Mart describes the show as an exploration of “vulnerable and depopulated places” through contemporary art, linking the theme to broader reflections on how communities encounter and value these spaces.
The exhibition brings together works from the Mart Collections with site-specific interventions by national and international artists. The museum says the display is also accompanied by a program of events on the territory and public art projects, extending the exhibition beyond the gallery setting. The announcement positions the project as both an exhibition and a wider public-facing initiative.
Among the artists named in the exhibition are Carla Accardi, Giorgio Andreotta Calò, Giovanni Anselmo, Mirella Bentivoglio, Antonio Biasiucci, Marina Caneve, Theresa Hak Kyung Cha, Camilla de Maffei, giulia deval, Regina José Galindo, Shilpa Gupta, Ruud Janssen, Zhanna Kadyrova, YoungEun Kim, Maria Lai, Eunhee Lee, Richard Long, Matteo Lucca, Piero Manzoni, Ana Mendieta, Marzia Migliora, Francis Offman, OHT | Office for a Human Theatre, Sarker Protick, Mario Schifano, Santiago Sierra, Giovanna Silva, Mladen Stilinović, Natália Trejbalová, Andra Ursuța and Alice Visentin. Mart’s press text does not specify individual works in the public announcement, but it does indicate that the exhibition draws on a wide range of practices and generations.
The museum has also made a press kit available in its press room, with television footage and exhibition views scheduled to be uploaded in the following hours. The exhibition is listed as running at the Galleria Civica di Trento in Trento, Italy, beginning on 17 July 2026. No closing date was given in the source material.
