DOCK20 in Lustenau, Austria, will open an exhibition by Jala Wahid on 2 October 2026, presenting the London-based artist’s work across sculpture, film, sound and installation. The opening is scheduled for 7pm, with the exhibition running from 3 October 2026 through 16 January 2027 at DOCK20 – Kunstraum und Sammlung Hollenstein.
According to the institution, Wahid’s practice examines the emotional potential of material and politics against the legacy of empire and colonialism. Her works connect contested historical images with poetic forms, developing what DOCK20 describes as a counter-narrative to colonial rhetoric. The exhibition will also engage with nationalism, history, iconography, archiving and the conditions of existence.
Wahid’s work is characterised by a combination of sensory and political concerns. DOCK20 describes her productions as aesthetically seductive, sensual and often marked by a delirious intensity. Rather than isolating political themes from questions of form and material, her practice brings them together through installations and objects that address the layered relationships between historical narratives, national identities and systems of representation.
The exhibition forms part of DOCK20’s 2026 programme, which includes three to four exhibitions each year. The venue describes itself as a kunstraum and collection, and its institutional holdings include the Stephanie Hollenstein Collection, the Karl Schwärzler Collection and a collection of contemporary art. DOCK20’s programme operates alongside the collection and a specialist library for art and cultural history. The institution is located at Pontenstraße 20 in Lustenau.
Wahid has held solo exhibitions at GAK Bremen, Kunstverein Freiburg and Tramway in Glasgow in 2023, and at BALTIC in Gateshead in 2022. Her work has also appeared in group exhibitions at MK Gallery in Milton Keynes in 2024, Stavanger Art Museum in Norway in 2023 and Goldsmiths CCA in London in 2022. Earlier presentations included exhibitions at CAPC Musée d’art contemporain in Bordeaux, SculptureCenter in New York, Arnolfini in Bristol, De La Warr Pavilion in Bexhill and Nottingham Contemporary.
From 2012 to 2019, Wahid was a co-editor of SALT. Magazine. Her work is held in private and institutional collections worldwide, including Lafayette Anticipations in Paris and FRAC Grand Large in Dunkerque, according to DOCK20. The Lustenau exhibition opens on 2 October at 7pm and remains on view until 16 January 2027. Admission to DOCK20 exhibitions and events is free. During the exhibition period, opening hours are Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 10am to 1pm, with additional afternoon hours on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 2pm to 6pm.
