Neues Museum Nürnberg will host an artist talk on 16 August with Mariana Castillo Deball and Mexico specialist Viola König, alongside the museum’s exhibition ‘Ella es la luna and she lights the darkness’. According to the museum’s programme, Castillo Deball will lead visitors through the exhibition before joining König for a discussion about her work with cultural-historical artefacts and documents.

The talk is scheduled for 15.30 and is listed as a 60-minute event. The museum describes the ticket price as €4 plus admission. The event is presented as part of the exhibition programme for ‘Ella es la luna and she lights the darkness’, which is installed on the museum façade.

Castillo Deball’s exhibition is rooted in archaeological objects and explores the mythology of the Aztecs as well as the colonial history of Mexico. The museum says the work centres on the artist’s engagement with the ‘Nuremberg Map of Tenochtitlan’, identified in the programme text as the first European map of the Aztec capital. For the Neues Museum Nürnberg, Castillo Deball developed a cycle of works based on that map into a textile installation.

The museum’s exhibition page states that Mariana Castillo Deball, born in 1975 in Mexico City, works at the intersection of art, archaeology and cultural history. It also notes that her sculptures, paintings, prints and installations examine the role of objects in identity and historiography. The museum says the project is a collaboration with the Germanisches Nationalmuseum, where the first historical print of the ‘Nuremberg Map of Tenochtitlan’ was shown in the exhibition ‘Nürnberg Global’ until 22 March 2026.

König is identified by the museum as a Mexico specialist and former director of the Ethnological Museum Berlin. In the event description, the two are said to discuss what such objects reveal about colonialism and how their meanings continue to change today. The artist talk follows Castillo Deball’s tour through the exhibition and her introduction to her working methods.

‘Ella es la luna and she lights the darkness’ is on view from 6 February to 30 August 2026 at Neues Museum Nürnberg. The museum’s current programme also includes a new presentation of Gerhard Richter’s work under the title ‘3 Räume’, but the artist talk with Castillo Deball and König is specifically tied to the façade installation and exhibition currently in place at the museum.

Neues Museum Nürnberg is located at Klarissenplatz in Nuremberg and presents art and design across several galleries and display spaces. The museum lists the artist talk for Sunday, 16 August 2026, at 15.30.
