The Neues Museum Nürnberg is presenting ‘David Hockney: goes digital’, a focused exhibition of eight digitally created drawings by David Hockney (1937–2026). The presentation is on view at the museum in Nuremberg from 6 March through 1 November 2026.
The exhibition examines a later development in Hockney’s practice, when the artist moved from conventional drawing materials to digital tools. According to the museum, Hockney was already over 70 when he exchanged paints and brushes for the ‘Brushes’ app, which he discovered on an iPhone. He began drawing with the application in the winter of 2008 and later moved to the larger format of the iPad.
The works on display are editions produced in connection with the publication of ‘A Bigger Book’ in 2016 and ‘My Window’ in 2020, both issued by Taschen. Their subjects include flowers arranged in vases and views from Hockney’s bedroom in Bridlington, East Yorkshire, observed across changing seasons.
The digital works extend concerns already associated with Hockney’s broader output. The museum notes that his pool paintings have become iconic and that he is widely identified with intensely coloured landscape painting. In the Nuremberg presentation, the drawings instead foreground the possibilities of the screen-based image and the artist’s sustained attention to everyday observation, including interiors, plants and shifts in light and weather.
‘David Hockney: goes digital’ occupies one room at the Neues Museum Nürnberg, a museum devoted to art and design at Klarissenplatz. The museum is located directly by Nuremberg’s main railway station and is accessible via the entrance on Klarissenplatz. Its regular opening hours are Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 6pm, and Thursday from 10am to 8pm; it is closed on Mondays.
The presentation is accompanied by public tours. A 60-minute tour focused on Hockney’s painting and drawing will take place on 23 August at 3pm, with a further tour on 27 September at the same time; each costs €3 in addition to admission. A family tour, ‘Art and Design – What is it?’, is scheduled for 6 September at 10.30am. The museum credits a donation from Barbara and Maximilian Ring to the museum foundation supporting the state museums of Bavaria.
