The Brooklyn Museum's free Summer Jazz series brought the Brooklyn-based multi-instrumentalist and composer Peter Apfelbaum to the museum on Sunday 16 August 2026, from 2 to 4 pm. The museum's listing has him leading a special set with Hieroglyphics, the “genre-mashing big band” whose sound it places between world-music elements and the jazz avant-garde. The concert has now taken place.

It was held in the Martha A. and Robert S. Rubin Lobby on the first floor of the museum at 200 Eastern Parkway, Brooklyn, and was free and open to the public; tickets were required only for the galleries and for the exhibition Iris van Herpen: Sculpting the Senses. The museum files the concert under its Music programmes.

Summer Jazz is presented in partnership with the Jazz Foundation of America and sits inside Drawing America: US@250, the museum's season of installations, programmes and partnerships marking the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, which runs from Pride to Election Day 2026. The series gathers New York musicians whose styles draw on blues, roots and international sounds.

The series has not finished. The next concert, Summer Jazz: Chembo Corniel Quintet, takes place on Sunday 23 August 2026, again from 2 to 4 pm in the Rubin Lobby and again free, with the Grammy-nominated percussionist Wilson “Chembo” Corniel Jr., a New Yorker whose playing draws on Afro-Caribbean percussion among other traditions.
