Liverpool’s music story is being traced in a new self-guided heritage trail supported by The Beatles Story. The Liverpool Music Heritage Trail offers a 90-minute walk through key sites linked to the city’s musical past, presenting a route that runs from the emergence of the Mersey Beat scene to later generations of clubs, venues and music-making across Liverpool.

According to the trail’s project page, the route spans sixty years of history, from 1957 to 2016, and focuses on places, sounds, stories and people embedded in Liverpool’s musical identity. The trail is designed to move from grassroots scenes to global phenomena, reflecting the city’s long relationship with music rather than a single genre or era. It is presented as an online and on-the-ground guide to locations that have shaped Liverpool’s reputation as a music city.

The trail highlights twelve historic locations, all marked with plaques. Visitors are directed to scan QR codes on each plaque for short film clips about the site, while an accompanying map can be downloaded for the full route. The project page also says an online version of the trail is available, with themed sections that include extra information, film clips and music playlists. Among the themed stops listed are ‘The Vinyl Frontier – NEMS and Probe’, ‘Clubland – Cream and The Kaz’, ‘Up The Hill – The Sink and The Picket’, ‘Money (that’s what I want) – The State and Liverpool Stadium’, ‘Forgotten Town – Warehouse and The Lomax’, and ‘Lightning Strikes (not once but twice) – The Cavern and Eric’s’.

The project’s framing places Liverpool’s music history within the city’s broader identity as a port city. The trail page says the River Mersey has shaped the city’s communities, ambience and attitude to life, and links that maritime history to the built environment and to the development of music culture. It describes Liverpool as a place where music scenes move quickly, and says the selected locations are all sites that have now “bitten the dust” but were once “shape shifters and disrupters.”

Funding for the trail comes from The Beatles Story and Liverpool City Region Combined Authority, and it was developed in partnership with Liverpool Business Improvement District. The Beatles Legacy Group is identified as the initiator of the project. The acknowledgements on the site also name Liverpool City Region metro mayor Steve Rotheram, Liverpool BID, and a range of contributors from the music and creative sectors.

The launch comes through Liverpool Music City, which hosts the trail alongside other stories and features on the city’s music culture. For The Beatles Story, the project extends its support for a history that begins with the Mersey Beat era and continues through Liverpool’s changing network of venues, scenes and personalities. The trail’s map, plaques and online materials present that history as a citywide route, with the tour set at about 90 minutes and the first locations already listed on the project page.
