The National Gallery film ‘Capturing the moment water turns to wine’ has a running time of 9:01. It features curator Imogen Tedbury and conservator Paul Ackroyd discussing Mattia Preti’s ‘The Marriage at Cana’.
The film presents Christ’s first miracle as an event that unfolds almost in slow motion, with every glance, gesture and movement drawing viewers toward the exact moment when water becomes wine.
The painting is the National Gallery’s only work by Preti, and the film places it in relation to the artist’s influences, including Paolo Veronese, as well as his rivalry with fellow painter Luca Giordano.
Before it came into the National Gallery’s collection, the painting suffered water damage, which necessitated its restoration treatment by Paul.
Tedbury and Ackroyd discuss the drama, storytelling and technical brilliance behind Preti’s ‘The Marriage at Cana’.
