The Art Gallery of New South Wales will mark NAIDOC Week with a free Art After Hours program on Wednesday 8 July, running from 5.30pm to 10pm at the gallery’s Sydney site on Gadigal Country. The evening is billed as a broad public program with panel discussions, artist talks, collection tours, performances, a community barbecue in the Tank and other activities.

According to the gallery’s Artmail listing, the event will explore Blak excellence in media, screen culture and community cultural leadership. Daniel Browning will lead a panel discussion featuring Shane Phillips and Aaliyah-Jade Bradbury. The program also includes an artist talk with Billy Bain and a collection tour with Blak Douglas, alongside performances and community gathering spaces.

The NAIDOC Week Art After Hours event sits within the gallery’s wider Thursday-night and evening programming platform, but the source material presents this date as a one-night celebration rather than a longer series. Entry is free, and the event page identifies it as part of the gallery’s NAIDOC Week offering for 2026.

The timing of the program places it alongside a cluster of Indigenous-focused and related activities listed by the gallery for early July. In the same Artmail update, the institution points to the opening of Billy Bain’s new exhibition, 'By the River', on 4 July. That exhibition, also free, is described by the gallery as new work by Dharug artist Billy Bain reflecting on the migration of the long-finned eel and on the artist’s own path of cultural return.

'By the River' is presented in the Naala Badu building, Lower level 2, and the gallery says it marks Bain’s first exhibition at a state art museum. The exhibition includes sculpture and paintings, and the gallery describes it as part of its Contemporary Projects series. Textile elements in the show were created in collaboration with Bain’s mother, Kathleen Bain.

Elsewhere in the same newsletter, the gallery notes that the 2026 Archibald, Wynne and Sulman Prizes remain on view until 16 August, and that 'Avatar: Forms of Vishnu' is currently open in the Naala Badu building. But the NAIDOC Week Art After Hours program is presented as its own evening event, separate from those exhibitions, and the source material does not link the celebration to a specific exhibition venue beyond the gallery itself.

The 8 July program runs from 5.30pm to 10pm at the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Art Gallery Road, The Domain, Sydney, with free entry.
