"Bored of Necessity: 30 Years of Practicing," the first major survey of the interdisciplinary artist Michael Anthony García, closes on Saturday, October 3, 2026, at the Emma S. Barrientos Mexican American Cultural Center (ESB-MACC) in Austin. The exhibition, which opened with a reception on September 5, fills the center's Community Gallery and the Atrium of the Auditorium on the first floor, and admission to the galleries is free.

On its final day, the center is hosting an artist talk, performance and book release with García from 2 to 4 p.m. The Texas arts publication Glasstire has also featured the show in its "Five-Minute Tours" video series.

The survey gathers three decades of sculpture, installation, performance, photography, video and archival material, tracing a practice built on experimentation and persistence and on making art as a way to understand the world.

Its title points to a tension at the center of García's career. According to the ESB-MACC, art began for him as a necessity, a way to survive, define himself and ask questions. Over years of repetition and steady production, that necessity became something he chose to resist, and instead of settling into a fixed approach he has repeatedly reinvented his work, letting curiosity, humor, vulnerability and risk shape each new series.

Across his career García has addressed identity, mortality, labor, queerness, Latinidad, memory and consumer culture, along with the uneasy relationship between the body and the objects it leaves behind. Clothing, one of his best-known materials, recurs throughout the exhibition both as sculpture and as a stand-in for the body, an empty form that still carries traces of lived experience. Working across media, he turns everyday materials into reflections on presence and absence, intimacy and spectacle, and permanence and decay.
