Museo Jumex in Mexico City will extend its opening hours until 8 p.m. on August 26, 2026, for ‘Noches en el Museo Jumex’, a free evening programme featuring screenings by Melanie Smith and Gina Arizpe. No advance registration is required.

The programme will begin at 6 p.m. with ‘Estadio Azteca. Proeza Maleable’ (2010), a video installation made by Smith in collaboration with Rafael Ortega. Filmed at Mexico City’s Estadio Azteca with the participation of more than 3,000 students, the work brings together references to art, popular culture and Mexico’s recent history. The museum describes the piece as an examination of identity, memory and the construction of collective imaginaries.

Smith, a visual artist who has been based in Mexico since the late 1980s, works across painting, video, photography, installation and performance. According to the museum, her practice explores tensions involving modernity, globalisation, consumption and memory, moving between Latin American and European contexts.

At 6:30 p.m., the museum will screen ‘Al margen del juego’ (2026), a video work by Arizpe made in the plaza of Museo Jumex during broadcasts of Mexico’s national football team matches at the 2026 World Cup. The work shows an immobile body inside the installation ‘Tribunas’ by Tercerunquinto, set apart from the intensity of the sporting spectacle.

The museum presents Arizpe’s work as a reflection on the social and political dynamics that also shape football, as well as on what remains outside the field of vision. Her practice examines the physical and social limits of the body from a sociopolitical perspective through video, installation, performance and actions in public space. The museum says she investigates marginal social contexts and the power structures that run through everyday life.

‘Noches en el Museo Jumex’ offers an evening opportunity to visit the museum’s exhibitions ‘Objetos de leyenda: Momentos icónicos en la historia del fútbol’ and ‘Colección Jumex: Visiones difusas’, both scheduled to close on August 30, 2026. The football exhibition traces the sport’s development from its local origins to its global reach through objects including balls, shirts, trophies and personal belongings associated with figures such as Pelé, Diego Maradona, Lionel Messi, David Beckham and Kylian Mbappé. ‘Visiones difusas’ brings together works from the Jumex Collection by Ale de la Puente, Michel François, Cyprien Gaillard, Petrit Halilaj, Jim Hodges, Emily Kraus, Pipilotti Rist and Teresa Solar Abboud.

Museo Jumex is located at Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra 303, Colonia Granada, Mexico City. The August 26 programme is free and runs alongside the museum’s extended hours, with the two screenings scheduled for 6 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.
