Wassily Kandinsky

Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic, 1866–1944

Russian painter and art theorist widely credited as a pioneer of abstract art in Western modernism. Beginning his painting studies at age 30, Kandinsky developed a theoretical foundation for abstraction and co-founded the Der Blaue Reiter movement before teaching at the Bauhaus. His abstract compositions continued in Paris until his death, establishing him as a foundational figure in 20th-century art.
