Chinese contemporary artist, documentarian, and activist whose work spans sculpture, installation, photography, and video. A founder of the avant-garde Stars group in 1978, Ai Weiwei is a vocal critic of the Chinese government who investigates corruption and human rights through artistic practice and public activism. His 2011 detention for 81 days and 2015 Amnesty International Ambassador of Conscience Award have made him an icon of artistic resistance.
