American, b. 1969
American contemporary artist born in 1969, exploring race, gender, violence, and identity through large-scale black cut-paper silhouettes and mixed-media installations. Her tableaux interrogate the legacy of slavery and American racism through confrontational imagery drawn from slave narratives and minstrel traditions. Since the 1990s she has expanded her practice to include video, projection, and sculpture.
