With special collaboration from the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya, or MNAC, Kunsthalle München will present 'Barcelona Moderna, de Gaudí a Picasso' from October 23, 2026, through February 21, 2027. The exhibition is set to bring together 160 paintings, drawings, sculptures, pieces of furniture, and architectural models in a survey of Catalan Modernism between 1880 and 1914.
The MNAC announced the project on July 17, saying the Barcelona museum has contributed both loans and expertise to the exhibition. Its involvement includes the loan of 21 works, among them Ramon Casas's 'Ramon Casas i Pere Romeu en un tàndem' and Hermen Anglada Camarasa's 'La granadina'. The institution is also providing scientific and academic support, and its conservators are participating in the exhibition catalogue.
According to the museum's notice, the exhibition is intended to show the richness and diversity of Catalan Modernism and to highlight key figures from the period. By focusing on the years between 1880 and 1914, the project frames Modernism as a broad cultural movement rather than a single artistic style, bringing together painting, design, sculpture, and architecture in one presentation.
The collaboration extends MNAC's role beyond lending works to shaping the scholarly framework of the project. The museum's support is being offered alongside the Munich institution's organization of the exhibition, underscoring the international circulation of Catalan art historical material as it moves into a major German venue.
'Barcelona Moderna, de Gaudí a Picasso' takes its title from two of the best-known names associated with Barcelona's artistic modernity, though the exhibition itself encompasses a wider field. The 160 works announced for the show are meant to provide a cross-section of visual and applied arts from the period, including architectural models that point to the movement's close relationship with the built environment.
Kunsthalle München's exhibition will open on October 23, 2026, and run until February 21, 2027.
