The Graphische Sammlung ETH Zürich will open ‘Hugo Suter. Flowing and Growing. The Printmaking’ on Tuesday, 18 August 2026, with the exhibition on view from 19 August to 8 November 2026. Announced in the collection’s August newsletter, the project is centered on the printmaking of Hugo Suter (1943–2013), whose graphic work is described by the institution as central to his practice.
According to the newsletter, the exhibition will present printmaking as a key strand in Suter’s oeuvre and focus on the artist’s visual worlds, which were inspired by his immediate surroundings, from the view from his studio to Lake Hallwil. The collection highlights his hyalographs in particular, identifying them as highly precise glass prints that bring his layered image ideas into focus. The exhibition title appears in German in the newsletter as ‘Hugo Suter. Fliessen und Spriessen. Das druckgrafische Schaffen’.
The show is being presented by the Graphische Sammlung ETH Zürich, part of ETH Library, at its space in Zurich. The opening is scheduled for 18.00 with doors opening at 18.00 and a welcome at 18.30. Beat Wismer, president of the Hugo und Mariann Suter Stiftung, and Dr Linda Schädler, head of the Graphische Sammlung ETH Zürich, are listed as speakers for the opening, with Alexandra Barcal and Tim Oechslin introducing the exhibition as part of the curatorial team.
Beyond the display itself, the newsletter says the exhibition is tied to a research project launched by the Graphische Sammlung ETH Zürich together with the Hugo und Mariann Suter Stiftung. That project is intended to study, document and make accessible Suter’s printed oeuvre for the first time in a digital catalogue raisonné. The announcement presents the scholarly component as an integral part of the exhibition rather than a separate add-on.
Suter’s work is framed in the newsletter as both visually poetic and materially exact, with printmaking occupying a central place in his artistic practice. The focus on hyalographs also points to the technical specificity of his output: the newsletter describes these works as glass prints of high precision. The exhibition therefore brings together close looking at individual works and a broader research effort around the printed body of work.
The August newsletter also lists a series of related public events running alongside the exhibition in late summer and early autumn 2026. These include guided tours with the curatorial team on 25 August, a Scientifica-related tour on 30 August, an ‘Art at Noon’ talk on the archive on 7 September, another on hyalography on 21 September, an SIK-ISEA event on 24 September at ETH Zurich’s main building, and an ‘In Focus’ conversation about Hugo Suter’s diaries on 29 September. The exhibition itself remains on view in Zurich until 8 November 2026.
