Aomori Museum of Art has announced a display in its Nara Yoshitomo room featuring 'Sakhalin', a slideshow of photographs the artist took during a 2014 trip to Sakhalin. The museum said the presentation is being shown alongside the exhibition '装飾する魂', where visitors can also see displays on the clothing, food and housing of northern Indigenous peoples.
The museum’s post describes the two presentations as loosely connected, inviting viewers to sense the “wind of the north” through both. 'Sakhalin' is presented as a slideshow rather than a conventional wall-based photo installation, and the museum frames it within the same broader set of northern themes as the curatorial material in '装飾する魂'.
The announcement places Nara’s travel photographs in direct dialogue with cultural displays focused on the lives of northern peoples. While the museum did not elaborate further on the contents of the slideshow, it identified the material as photographs from Nara’s 2014 journey to Sakhalin, a reference that situates the work as part of the artist’s wider engagement with place and environment.
