Museo Picasso Málaga has pointed visitors towards Roberto Otero’s photographic archive as a way of recognising works in its permanent display. The photographs record paintings and sculptures now hanging in the museum’s galleries as they once stood in Picasso’s house in Mougins, works the artist valued enough to keep for himself.
The distinction matters: these are Picasso’s own works, held back by the artist rather than acquired from others, and the archive images return them to the rooms he lived in rather than to a gallery wall.
The works sit within the museum’s permanent presentation, ‘Pablo Picasso: Structures of Invention. Unity of a Life’s Work’, which the museum lists as running from 19 March 2024 until 30 January 2028. Curated by Michael FitzGerald, it gathers around 144 works, most of them from a temporary deposit made by the Fundación Almine y Bernard Ruiz-Picasso, and rearranges the galleries away from the habit of dividing Picasso’s career into stylistic periods or into chapters named after the women in his life.
No exhibition dates or public programme are attached to the archive material itself. Museo Picasso Málaga occupies the Palacio de Buenavista on Calle San Agustín in Málaga and opens daily from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
