The Suntory Museum of Art in Tokyo will host 'Eye's Feast: Tableware' from July 8 to August 30, 2026, presenting a focused look at Japanese ceramic tableware from the Momoyama through Edo periods. The exhibition is framed around the museum’s core idea of enjoying beauty in everyday life, and it brings together ceramics that were used not only for eating and serving, but also for communicating taste, status and hospitality.

According to the museum, the show examines how, some 400 years ago, Japanese hosts had already established a culture of seeking out, using and enjoying ceramic tableware from different production centers, in varied forms and with a range of patterns and functions. The exhibition title, translated as 'Eye's Feast,' points to the idea that tableware was meant to enrich a guest’s experience visually as well as through food.

The museum says the display will include large platters, elegant bowls and distinctive mukozuke, or side-dish vessels, with attention to the visual messages embedded in their designs. Motifs and forms are presented as carrying meanings such as auspiciousness, seasonal feeling and the desire to entertain guests with unusual vessels. The exhibition also notes that Japanese appreciation of ceramic tableware extended beyond domestic production to imports from overseas, including China.

Works by Kenzan Ogata are among the highlights named by the museum, alongside pieces by other makers. The exhibition is not organized as a survey of a single artist or kiln, but as a broad presentation of historical ceramics that together illustrate both aesthetic refinement and practical use. The museum’s materials emphasize the造形, or shaped form, of each vessel as a point of close looking.

The Suntory Museum of Art, based in Tokyo’s Roppongi district, describes the exhibition as part of its long-standing interest in how art appears in daily life. It also indicates that the presentation will include occasional references to the hospitality practices of the period when these objects were in use, giving visitors a sense of the settings in which the tableware functioned.

'Eye's Feast: Tableware' runs at the Suntory Museum of Art from July 8 to August 30, 2026. The museum notes that some works will be rotated during the exhibition period for conservation reasons, and that the individual display periods for each object are listed in the exhibition works PDF. The museum is open from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., with evening opening until 8:00 p.m. on Fridays, and until 8:00 p.m. on August 29. The museum is closed on Tuesdays.
