Tokyo’s Yamatane Museum of Art has released the first volume of a commemorative catalogue celebrating its 60th anniversary. Titled 'The Best of the Yamatane Collection I', the publication is being offered through the museum shop and online.
The museum describes the book as the first installment in a best-of catalogue series created to mark the anniversary of the institution, which is based in Tokyo. According to the product listing, the volume presents 81 works selected from the museum’s holdings, along with work-by-work commentary. The publication is intended to showcase examples from the museum’s core strengths in Edo painting, ukiyo-e and modern Japanese painting.
The catalogue is issued by Yamatane Museum of Art in 2026 and runs to 174 pages in A4 format. It is priced at ¥2,860 including tax. Among the modern Japanese painters represented are Araki Jippo, Ikeda Terukata, Imamura Shiko, Uemura Shoen, Okumura Togyu, Kaburaki Kiyokata, Kawai Gyokudo, Kawabata Ryushi, Kobori Tomoto, Komuro Suiun, Nishi Seiun, Shibata Zeshin, Shimomura Kanzan, Takeuchi Seihō, Tanomura Chikuden, Nishimura Goun, Noguchi Shohin, Hashimoto Gahō, Hayami Gyoshū, Hishida Shunsō, Fukuda Heihachirō, Maeda Seison, Matsuoka Eikyu, Murakami Kagaku, Yasuda Yukihiko, Yamaguchi Hōshun and Yokoyama Taikan.
The Edo painting and ukiyo-e section includes works by Itō Jakuchū, Iwasa Matabei, Utagawa Hiroshige, Katsushika Hokusai, Sakai Hōitsu, Suzuki Kiitsu, Suzuki Harunobu, Tsubaki Chinzan, a work attributed to Tawaraya Sōtatsu, and Tōshūsai Sharaku. Together, the names listed reflect the museum’s focus on major figures across Japanese art history.
The museum’s announcement said the publication is the first of a series of best catalogue volumes produced for the 60th anniversary.
