Tokyo’s annual Summer Night Museum program will return in August 2026, with the Tokyo Photographic Art Museum among the participating venues offering evening access, reduced admission and short live performances. According to the Tokyo Metropolitan Foundation for History and Culture, the cross-institution program runs on Fridays from August 6 to August 28, with the Tokyo Photographic Art Museum extending the schedule to Thursdays and Fridays for its own participation.
The foundation says the initiative brings together several of the city’s metropolitan museums, galleries and cultural facilities, including the Tokyo Photographic Art Museum in Ebisu, the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography’s institutional successor under the foundation’s current naming, alongside other venues across Tokyo. The program is presented as a summer-season effort to keep museums open later into the evening and to pair exhibitions with special benefits for visitors.
At the Tokyo Photographic Art Museum, the summer-night schedule includes evening opening hours from 5 pm to 9 pm on August 6, 7, 13, 14, 20, 21, 27 and 28. During the program period, students admitted after 5 pm receive free entry, while general visitors and seniors aged 65 and over are eligible for discounted admission, subject to proof of status. The museum also lists its own exhibition program as part of the night opening: 'Mako Idemitsu: Women's Works — An Artist's Autobiography in Images' and 'TOP Collection: Tomorrow's Dinner', both running through September 21, and 'Nikon Small World / NIKON JOICO AWARD Exhibition: Illuminating the Future of Life in the Microscopic World', which continues until August 23.
The museum’s mini concert is scheduled for August 13, with two performances at 6:30 pm and 7:30 pm, each lasting about 20 minutes. The concert will take place in the museum’s second-floor lobby and is free of charge. The program lists Borodin’s String Quartet No. 2 in D major, first movement, and Debussy’s String Quartet in G minor, Op. 10, first movement, on the bill. Performers named by the foundation include violinists Kotone Mizuno and Fumika Sato, violist Hiroshi Haseyama and cellist Kokon Yamamoto.
The mini concerts are part of a wider collaboration titled 'Museum × Music!', jointly organized with Tokyo Bunka Kaikan and Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre. The foundation says the series features classical concerts by musicians including winners and participants from the Tokyo Music Competition and young artists affiliated with GOA+. The events are designed to be attended without advance booking, though the site notes that programs may change or be canceled depending on weather and other conditions.
Elsewhere in the 2026 Summer Night Museum lineup, Tokyo Metropolitan institutions will host similar evening concerts and related benefits on different dates and at different venues, including Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum, Tokyo Metropolitan Teien Art Museum, Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography, Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Contemporary Art, Edo-Tokyo Open Air Architectural Museum and Shibuya City Cultural Center Owada? No — the verified source material lists Tokyo Metropolitan Shibuya Public Hall? No. The verified venue is Tokyo Metropolitan Shibuya Koen-dori Gallery, where a mini concert is also planned for August 14. At the Tokyo Photographic Art Museum, the free mini concert on August 13 remains the museum’s featured music event within the August night-opening schedule.
