Museo Casa Natal Picasso in Málaga is using the summer season to draw visitors to the house where the artist was born, in a message the museum posted on 10 August 2026 that frames the city as the root of Picasso’s personality and his work.
Picasso was born on Plaza de la Merced on 25 October 1881 and spent his first ten years in Málaga; in October 1891 the family moved to A Coruña and later to Barcelona. He came back for the summers of 1895, 1896, 1897 and 1899, and made a final stay, accompanied only by his friend Casagemas, between the end of December 1900 and 28 January 1901, according to the museum’s account of its displays.
The permanent route runs through nine sections over two floors. It opens with Pablo, crecer en el taller, on the training he began as a child under his father José Ruiz Blasco, a drawing teacher at Málaga’s Escuela de Bellas Artes, alongside works by Denis Belgrano, Emilio Ocón and Joaquín Martínez de la Vega. Later rooms cover the model, with original sheets from sketchbook no. 7 for Les Demoiselles d’Avignon, the only one of the sixteen preparatory books held in Spain; the artist’s studio; the family and the domestic interior on Plaza de la Merced; doves, the motif Picasso took from his father and turned into a peace symbol; the Mediterranean, introduced by the early oil El puerto de Málaga; and bullfighting, with the small panel El picador amarillo and aquatints from La tauromaquia.
The museum opens daily, including public holidays, from 9.30am to 8pm, with admission closing 15 minutes before. Capacity is capped at 25 people in the birthplace house at Plaza de la Merced 15 and 72 in the temporary exhibition hall at Plaza de la Merced 13.
